This week we will finish reading Percy Jackson: The Lightning Thief. We will have a chapter quiz over the reading on Tuesday with a final test over the novel on Friday.
All reassessments and late work must be completed by Friday. Please see me if you wish to reassess over anything no later than Tuesday so I can get study guides for you to complete and turn in, in order to reassess by Friday. Tuesday we had a Percy Jackson tournament where teams competed as we reviewed the book. This was a lot of fun and a great way to review!
This week we will continue reading Percy Jackson. Our goal for the week is to finish through chapter 19. We will have a "Tournament Day" on Tuesday, where we will have a class competition to review what we have read so far. Our last tournament day got pretty intense as we have some fierce competitors this year, but we had a blast and I know they are looking forward to a rematch.
We will also be reading a couple folktales, including the African-American tale, "Brer Possum's Dilemma", and the Chinese tale, "Waters of Gold". On Friday, we have the honor of hosting an author, Dan Poblocki, from Scholastic. Friday afternoon we will also have our MAP incentive to reward our kiddos for working so hard over the past couple of weeks during MAP testing. It's going to be an exciting week! **As we near the end of the school year, if you wish for your student to reassess over any of the skills we have worked on this year, please let me know so we can make arrangements. Re-assessments must be complete by Friday, May 13 and I need a few days notice prior to reassessing. Thanks for understanding!** As we finish working on legends, we are also still reading The Lightning Thief. This book has proven to be one of our favorites this year. Many students have finished the first book and are working on others in the series. I love it!
This week we read the legend of "Sir Gawain and the Green Knight" and analyzed the cultural values in this medieval legend.
Some of these values include: * Be loyal to those you serve and be courteous to all. * Always be truthful and keep your word. * Face danger with courage and show mercy to the week While eighth grade finished MAP testing, seventh grade took time to do some engaging activities that we don't always have time in class for, like reading a reader's theater play about Odysseus to go with our mythology unit.
We have another exciting week in store!
Monday 7th grade students will be taking the SRI test. This will be the third and final SRI test for this year. To be considered "proficient", a seventh grade student needs to score between 970 - 1120. Tuesday and Wednesday 8th grade students will be taking the Science portion of the MAP test. This means that 7th grade students will be with their testing groups in the morning, just like when we tested last week. The core teachers have put together lesson plans and activities for students to complete while working in their testing groups. ELA is asking all students to read the myths of Odysseus and Perseus and work on writing. In class we will be reading the medieval legend of "Sir Gawain and the Green Knight" and analyzing cultural values in legends. It's MAP week! We will be testing Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday this week. Please make sure your child gets plenty of sleep, eats a healthy breakfast, and arrives to school on time.
In class we will continue reading Percy Jackson and using the novel to practice inferencing, cause-and-effect, and identifying words with multiple meanings. This week we will continue reading Percy Jackson and will practice making inferences and identifying cause and effect.
We are also going to continue our study of myths, legends, and tales and read the legend of "Young Arthur" as we identify and analyze characteristics of legends. |
